I have always felt compelled to make art. When I was three, I picked up a pencil and began to draw. My parents, who found this interesting, provided me with a table and chairs on which to work. In our family kitchen, at my table, I would draw for hours. This desire to make art has continued throughout my life. I feel compelled to create and explore my ideas, thoughts, and inspirations through my artistic practice.

In my practice I have found many thing that inspire me. Raised in rural Minnesota, I was originally inspired by the open skies, flat landscape, and natural environments of the Midwest. Also inspiration was found in decaying man-made objects, old cars, abandoned gravel yards, farms, and buildings. Throughout my life music has been important, and I listen to music while working. The external world is influential, but the internal world of thoughts and feelings is as important to me as well.

The combination of the external and internal world is what my work signifies. I create images that combine these states, and use realism and abstraction to create unique environments. Over the past several years my work has dealt with themes of beauty and decay, human relationships, sex, and spirituality.

I create my work with transferred images. Using materials I discovered years ago, I am able to transfer laser jet images onto the canvas. Applying the image facedown, I then remove the paper once it has dried, leaving the transferred image behind. Then with paint, pencil and crayon I start a process of layering. I continue this process of layering with transferred images and different mediums.

My practice of making art has been inspired by thought, vision, and music. These inspirations have allowed me to explore many themes. As I grow older, I continue to discover new ways to express my ideas and observations. My work continues to evolve as I develop new ways to represent, and interpret the internal and external world.
